It takes power to spin the engine, balancer, etc. faster, and this cuts into acceleration especially in 1st when the engine speeds up quickly. So try starting out in 1st and shifting to 2nd early. That'll save wear on the clutch and may help acceleration. Anyone researched this? I'd be interested to see some data :-)
